Our Role in the Community

Founded in 1981, LPCSAR is responsible for coordinating all SAR missions within La Plata County. Our highly trained volunteers respond to a variety of emergencies, including lost hikers, injured climbers, avalanche victims, and swiftwater rescues. Every member undergoes extensive training to ensure they are prepared for the unpredictable nature of SAR operations.

Each year, LPCSAR responds to dozens of calls, ranging from short searches in well-traveled areas to multi-day operations in extreme conditions. Our team is on call 24/7, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. We work closely with other emergency agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes for those in need.

Why We Train

Rescue missions can happen in the harshest conditions—blizzards, extreme heat, or in the dead of night. To ensure readiness, our team consistently trains in medical response, navigation, technical rope systems, UAS (drone) operations, and other critical SAR skills. This preparation allows us to act swiftly and effectively when every second counts.

Beyond our own training, LPCSAR also focuses on public education to help outdoor enthusiasts stay safe. We provide safety workshops, trail awareness programs, and resources to help hikers, skiers, and climbers prepare for their adventures.
