LPCSAR Volunteers In 2024
2024 has been an extraordinary year for the La Plata County Search and Rescue (LPCSAR) team. From rigorous training exercises in rugged terrain to responding to critical rescue missions, our volunteers have demonstrated exceptional dedication and resilience. With 33 incidents, 170 training exercises, and 136 community events, we’ve clocked an impressive 1,392 total hours of service. These numbers tell a story of commitment—not just to those in need but to our mission of preparedness and safety.
Our team’s incident response this year ranged from locating lost hikers in the San Juan mountains to assisting stranded hunters in our dense wooded terrains. Each mission brought unique challenges, pushing our volunteers to apply their training under pressure. Despite the unpredictability of search and rescue operations, our team maintained a remarkable response time and worked tirelessly to bring every mission to a successful conclusion.
Training has always been at the heart of what we do, and 2024 was no exception. Volunteers dedicated 785 hours to exercises designed to prepare for the unexpected. From mock rescues to advanced technical rope courses, our training sessions tested both skills and stamina. These exercises ensure that every LPCSAR member is ready to handle high-stress scenarios with confidence and precision.
But it’s not all about rescues. Community engagement is a crucial aspect of our work, and this year, LPCSAR participated in 136 events. From educational sessions on outdoor safety to public demonstrations of our UAS (drone) capabilities, we’ve connected with the community in meaningful ways. These events not only raise awareness about the importance of SAR but also inspire the next generation of volunteers.
Looking back on 2024, it’s clear that LPCSAR’s success is rooted in teamwork. Every mission, training session, and event was powered by the passion and commitment of our volunteers. They are the lifeblood of this organization, proving time and again that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when united by a common purpose.
